History
Planning and Design
The vision for Canton Tower was to create a landmark that would embody the essence of modern Guangzhou while meeting the needs of a multifunctional urban center. The planning process was driven by the desire to blend functionality with aesthetic appeal. The design of the tower was strategically crafted to provide a distinctive silhouette that complements the urban fabric of Guangzhou. The structure comprises two oval-shaped sections that are arranged upside down and rotated 135 degrees counterclockwise, producing the iconic "tiny waist" effect in the middle of the tower. This innovative design approach not only provides structural integrity but also allows the tower to present a different appearance from various angles, offering a dynamic visual experience.
Construction
The construction of Canton Tower involved the use of advanced engineering techniques and materials to achieve its impressive height and unique design. At its core, a concrete tube serves as the central axis, surrounded by an outer steel structure made up of 24 steel pillars, 46 steel rings and a diagonal cross pattern. This combination results in a hollowed-out effect, enhancing the openness of the structure. The construction required precise engineering to ensure the stability and safety of the tower, which stands as a testament to the capabilities of modern engineering and construction practices.
Opening
Canton Tower officially opened its doors to the public in 2010, offering an unparalleled experience of urban sightseeing and entertainment. Since its inception, the tower has attracted millions of visitors from around the world, eager to experience its unique offerings and breathtaking views. The opening of the tower marked a significant milestone in Guangzhou's development as a global city, reinforcing its status as a cultural and economic hub.
